Local pair killed in vehicle mishap
Two Jefferson City men were killed and the wife of one victim injured in a head-on collision involving a car and a pickup truck south of the city Saturday afternoon. Reported dead by the State Highway Patrol were Robert Mertens, 28, of 202 S. Lincoln St., and Ronnie Sinden, 29, of 209 Jackson St. Mrs. Linda Faye Sinden, 20, was listed in satisfactory condition at Charles E. Still Hospital Saturday evening following the 2:45 p.m. accident. According to the patrol, the Sinden vehicle, southbound on Green Berry Road less than half a mile south of the city limit, skidded out of its lane on a curve and struck the truck head-on. About 100 persons gathered to view the wreckage following the collision, three-tenths of a mile south of the Moreau River Bridge. It took a local Fire Department rescue squad about 15 minutes to free the two drivers from inside the two vehicles. The car, spun 180 degrees around, lay on the west shoulder of the road, its entire front section buckled in. A patrolman reported that Sinden, the driver, died upon impact, His wife was taken by ambulance from the scene, several minutes before the rescue workers could extricate Sindon. Mertens truck was overturned in the shallow embankment to the east side of the road, the cab bent back into the wagon, the hood completely stripped off the engine. Rescue workers had to cut a hole in the roof of the cab with pneumatic tools to reach Mertens, who was still alive when placed in another ambulance. A policeman said that his heart failed afterward. A small fire broke out in the engine of the truck, but was quickly extinguished while workers were cutting through to the driver. I"I heard the tires squeal before they hit," said one onlooker. "It happened so fast." Other persons milled around in the sunny weather watching firemen race to cut through the vehicles and place the bodies on stretchers. The portion of Green Berry Road, also known as Route B., where the mishap happened, a flat expanse that gently curves with good visibility in both directions, was charred with tire marks and bits of glass and scrap.7 His obituary stated:
