Ted Mertens purchased the St. Thomas Ferry on Cole County Highway B from Gus Kaiser in 1916 when he lived on the Charlie Braun place across the river. Ted later sold it to Carl Mertens who ran it for a while then sold it to Elmer Stockman, who later sold it back to Carl Mertens. Cart Mertens sold it to Clarence Viet of Osage Bend who sold it Emil Mertens.
While the Mertens' ran the ferry, one serious accident occured. This occurred in the late 1920's when Martin Hazelhorst and his father, Anton, drove off the end of the ferryboat. Martin swam to shore however his father got his heels caught in the fabric on the top of the Model A and drowned.
