Elmer was enumerated as the son of John Anthony Stockman under the name of "Roy C. Stockman" on the 1910 U. S. Census of Osage Township, Cole County, Missouri. He was listed as a 12-year-old white male, born in Missouri, as were his parents. He has attended school within the year, and is able to read, write, and speak English.5
Ted Mertens purchased the St. Thomas Ferry on Cole County Highway B from Gus Kaiser in 1916 when he lived on the Charlie Braun place across the river. Ted later sold it to Carl Mertens who ran it for a while then sold it to Elmer Stockman, who later sold it back to Carl Mertens. Cart Mertens sold it to Clarence Viet of Osage Bend who sold it Emil Mertens.
While the Mertens' ran the ferry, one serious accident occured. This occurred in the late 1920's when Martin Hazelhorst and his father, Anton, drove off the end of the ferryboat. Martin swam to shore however his father got his heels caught in the fabric on the top of the Model A and drowned.

Enumerated with him were: his wife Rose Benedicta, his sons Leonard, Harold and Elmer Matthew, his daughter Lydia Joan.6 At the time of his death the location for mailing benefits was reported as Missouri by the Social Security Administration.3
Elmer died on November 18, 1967 in Missouri, at age 69.3,1,4,2 He was buried circa November 20, 1967 in Resurrection Catholic Cemetery in Jefferson City, Missouri.1

He was born on November 6, 1934, in Jefferson City, the son of the late Elmer Matthew and Rose B. Mertens Stockman. Paul was a United States Army veteran serving during the Korean Conflict. He was United in marriage on December 3, 1957, in Ft. Carson, Colo., to Betty Jane Carneal who resides at the home. Paul was the owner and operator of Paul Stockman Cabinet Shop for over 50 years where he worked side-by side with his sons. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, VFW, and Eagles. paul enjoyed restoring old cars, fishing, and gardening. His greatest joy was his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Other survivors include: seven children, Tim Stockman (Donna Foster), Jefferson City; Lisa (Jim) Lage, Mary's Home; Nora Welschmeyer, Jefferson City; Earl Stockman, Taos; Brenda (Kevin) BUllock, Vienna; Greg Stockman, Jefferson City; Paul "Tate" (Lisa) Stockman Jr., Jefferson City; 21 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and four siblings, Rosemany Long, Jefferson City; Donna (Fred) Straub, Jefferson City; Ann (Ron) Schenk, Arizona' Carol (Dennis) Jacknewitz, Illinois. He was preceded in death by one sister, Lydia Cremer; and four brothers, Harold, Elmer, Earl and Leonard Stockman. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Gebruary 23, 2011, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Alex Ekka officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home with a prayer service at 3:30 p.m.
