      John Otto, a merchant of Vienna, was born in Osage County, Mo., in 1856, and is a son of Anton and Kate (Hoghonhof) Otto, natives of Germany. Anton Otto was born in 1830, and when ten years of age immigrated with his father, Herman Otto, to the United States, locating in Westphalia, Osage Co., Mo. Anton Otto is a farmer by occupation, now living in Vienna, Maries Co., where he removed from near Westphalia, in 1870; in 1851 he married Kate Hoghonhof, who was born in 1827, and their union has been blessed with five children, viz.: Henry, John, Kate, wife of Conrad Avers; Ann, wife of Henry Wieberg, and Mary, who married Henry Schwartz. John Otto was reared to the occupation of farming, and remained with his parents until twenty-one, when he was employed at Vienna as salesman for R. L. Schenker, in which capacity he worked five years. In 1884 he established a general store of his own at Vienna, which he has since conducted, and is doing a profitable business, carrying a first-class, stock of general merchandise. February 22, 1881, he married Maggie Buschmann, who was born in Osage County, Mo., in 1858, and is a daughter of Joseph Buschmann. He was born in 1815, and died June 1, 1884. Mrs. Buschmann, his wife, was born December 31, 1819, and died January 24, 1879. Mr. and Mrs. Otto have three-children, viz.: Kate, William and Henry. The families are devout members of the Roman Catholic Church. Mr. Otto is a Democrat.2 John Heinrich Otto, son of Anton Joseph Otto and Anna Catherine Hagenhoff, was born on October 7, 1856 in Koeltztown, Osage County, Missouri.1,3,4
John married Margaret Augusta Buschmann, daughter of Joseph Buschmann and Maria Christina Josephina Lohre, on February 22, 1881 at Vienna, Maries County, Missouri.1 John was the informant listed on the death certificate of Henry Otto on December 24, 1916.5,6 His wife, Margaret, died on August 30, 1932 at age 79.1
John died on January 3, 1941 in Missouri, at age 84, Francis H. Otto was the informant on his death certificate.1,3,4 His cause of death was asthmatic bronchitis.4
His obituary was published in the Maries County Gazette Newspaper on January 9, 1941.3 His obituary stated:

Aged Resident and former Merchant was Well Known
John I Otto died Saturday after a lingering illness. He had suffered poor health for the past four years. He was born at Koeltztown on October 8, 1856 and was 84 years, 2 months and 26 days of age. On February 22, 1881 he was married to Miss Margaret Buschmann who preceded him in death August 30, 1932. This union was blessed with six children of whom one daughter Katherine Forristel of St. Louis and one son Francis H. of Detroit, Michigan survive. John and Henry died in infancy, Bernard H. passed away in 1922 and William A. died in 1938.
The Ottos came to Vienna to reside and Mr. Otto established a mercantile business in which he was busily engaged for many years. He retired from active business about twenty-five years ago when he sold his store to his sons William and Bernard. Mr. Otto was a member of the Argyle Council of the Knights of Columbus.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning from the Visitation Church in Vienna, Reverend B. J. Schefler officiating and burial was in the parish cemetery under the direction of Undertaker W. C. Birmingham

Elizabeth Otto, widow of Joseph Otto, well known woman of Koeltztown, Mo., passed away at her home in Koeltztown early Saturday (23 May 1942) morning after an illness of several weeks. She was born at Koeltztown February 19, 1866 and was at the time of her passing, 76 years, 2 months and 4 days of age. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Bax, and grew up and attended the schools at Koeltztown. She was married there to Joseph Otto who preceded her in death several years ago. To them were born 11 children, all of whom survive her. They are: John and Misses Anna and Agnes of Koeltztown, Mrs. Herman Schuengel, Mrs. Rose Spellerberg, Misses Helen, Tillie, Dorothy and Mathilda Otto of St. Louis, William Otto of Cheyene Wells, Colo., and Herman Otto of St. Louis. There are two sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Zetta Blume of Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Mary Kloeppel of Koeltztown, Herman Bax of Koeltztown and Joseph Bax of Union. These with the 4 grandchildren, are the!
remaining near relatives.
Mrs. Otto was a life-long resident of Koeltztown, as well as one of the most highly respected person of the entire community. She was a member of the Koeltztown Catholic church all of her life and was also a member of the Married Ladies Sodality.
Her remains were taken to the Morton Funeral HOme for preparation and then returned to the home in Koeltztown where she lay in state until the hour of the services, whic was Tuesday morning at nine o'clock, with the Rev. Denner officiating at the Requiem High Mass which was attended by a large concourse of friends and relatives.
Pall bearers were her 2 sons, John and Herman, son-in-law Herman Schuengel and grandsons, Leonard Otto, Norbert Schuengel and Walter Spellerberg.
