Sydney O. Simons Caught foot in Track As Fast Train Approached Unable to Extricate - Killed Instantly.
     Mr. Sidney O. Simons, a former Marissa Resident was instantly killed by a train last Friday, September 14, 1928 at Kirkwood, MO. He was employed as a gardener and was at his usual work Friday, when a storm came up. He hastened to reach home before the storm broke and to do so took a shortcut across the railroad tracks. His foot caught and he fell in front of the approaching train and met instant death. His body was removed to the Bopp Funeral Parlors, where it remained until brought to Marissa for the funeral.
     Sydney O. Simons, was born in Washington County, Illinois, May 9 1855. He died at Kirkwood, MO. September 14, 1928 at the age of 73 years, 4 months 5 days. His funeral was held from the Baptist Church of Marissa on Sunday afternoon September 16 at 2 p.m. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Frary of Alton assisted by Rev. Weddington. A male quartette furnished music for the occasion. The interment took place in the family lot at the Marissa Cemetery. He was a resident of Marissa for about twenty five years.
     He went to Kirkwood about five years ago, where he has since made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Carter Snow. His wife and only son, Oscar preceded him in death. He is survived by five daughters. Mrs. Carter Snow, Mrs. Ed Mc Bride, Mrs. Margaret Ellison, Mrs. Flora Ragsdale and Miss Hattie Simons. He also leaves nineteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren and two brothers, William of Northern Illinois and Marion of Marissa. He followed the occupation of miner and was a member of Eureka Local No. 1.
     He was a one time sexton of the Marissa cemetery and as such, had prepared the final resting place for many people. He was a great lover of flowers and took great pride in gardening. He was of a cheerful happy disposition and leaves many friends to mourn his sudden departure.

His funeral service was held on September 16, 1928 at Baptist Church of Marissa, Marissa, St. Clair County, Illinois, conducted by Reverend Frary of Alton assisted by Reverend Weddington. A male quartette furnished music for the funeral.3 He was buried on September 16, 1928 in Marissa Cemetery in Marissa, St. Clair County, Illinois.3
