He was born Aug. 11, 1932, in Osage Township, the son of the late Carl J. and Esther Kolb Mertens. On Nov. 6, 1965, he was united in marriage to Karen Durk, who survives at the home.
Mr. Mertens owned and operated Mertens Construction Company, Mid-Missouri Limestone and Osage Quarries with his family. He attended St. Peters Catholic Church and was a charter member of St. Peters Knights of Columbus, a member of Association of General Contractors and assisted in many other organizations.
He enjoyed fishing, gardening and the outdoors and truly loved his work. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered.
Survivors also include four sons: Mitch Mertens and his wife, Shannon, of Mexico, Mo; Greg Mertens of Fulton; Doug Mertens and his wife, Courtney, of Fulton; and Clint Mertens of Columbia; four brothers: Bernard Mertens, Felix Mertens, Michael Mertens and Carl Mertens; four sisters: Grace Amira, Susan Mealy, Carolyn Gross and Delores Albers; six grandchildren: Benjamin Mertens, Kyle Mertens, Mary Mertens, John Mertens, Caroline Mertens and Rachel Mertens; and other relatives and many dear friends.
He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Bernadette Maes and Ruth Ann Harrell.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the St. Peters Building Fund in the care of Maupin Funeral Home, 301 Douglas Blvd., Fulton, Mo., 65251.
