Gus Kline, well known carpenter, died at St. mary's hospital this morning from a fractured skull sustained when he was struck by George Bagby, negro vaudeville entertainer, in from of Turner's Grocery, 500 E. Elm Street Christmas Eve.
Kline was 66 years old and was a lifelong resident.
According to a statement obtained from Bagby by the police Christmas morning, he struck in self defense. He said he walked into the Turner place and accosted Gabe Jones who was talking with Kline. He said he asked Jones for a "Christmas gift" and the latter told him he could have part of his bottle of beer.
Kine told Bagby he did not want him around and Bagby said, used abusive language. He said he followed him outside to "see if he wouldn't take it back," police quoted Bagby as saying.He said Kline struck at him and that he then struck Kline. He said when Kline did not move he became frightened and ran from the scene. He managed to elude the police during the night but Christmas morning he said he decided to give himself up.
Police today were investigating the case. Kline who worked as a carpenter here for more than forty years and who was a charter member of the carpenters union, sometimes treated men who worked with him. They said he was a good natured, mild mannered man who "was nice to everybody".
Born in Osage Bend
Kline was born in the Osage Bend community and came to this city with his father when he was 24 years old. He went into the carpenter business immediately and continued that work during the remainder of his life. His father preceded him in death about eight years ago.
He is survived by his wife, Lena Bock Kline, to whom he was married May 1, 1906. They had two children, Mrs. Leo Hirsch and Roy H. Kline. There are two grandchildren.
Bagby, who is know as "Cookie" was out on bond on a statuatory charge at the time of the alleged assault. He has been a tap dancer and has traveled all over the United States.
Prosecuting Attorney Carl. F. Wymore said charges would be filed against him. "I am investigating the case and the nature of the charges ill be governed by what we find." the prosecutor said.
Kline recovered consciousness only for a short time Tuesday night.
The funeral will take place from the Immaculate Conception Church.

Kline started out the door when Bagby hit him. Bagby fled and Kline was taken to the hospital in a police car. After hearing witness testimony Judge Foster Wheatley charged George Bagby with murder in the death of Gus Kline. His bond was set at $5000.00, and being unable to make the bond, he was returned to the jail.16

She was a nurse's aid at St. Mary's Health Center and a secretary at Immaculate Conception Church. She was a bookkeeper at Helios High School for 16 years before her retirement in 1978. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, the St. Ann's Sodality and the auxiliary at St. Marys. Survivors include one son, Donald L. Hirsch, Jefferson City, and four grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the St. Joseph's Home for the Aged chapel. The Rev. Henry Reichert will officiate. Entombment will be in the mausoleum at Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Freeman Mortuary. There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to the Helias Foundation or the charity of the donor's choice.

Hirsch of Jefferson City, Mo; and Gerald L. Hirsch and his wife Angela of Jefferson City, Mo; three nephews and one niece, Holden Hirsch, Connor Hirsch, Stephen Hirsch, and Anna Hirsch. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Leo and Angeline Hirsch, and her maternal grandparents, Ben and Alma Oilcloths. Visitation will be at Immaculate Conception Church from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m., Friday, December 4, 2015, with a prayer service to be conducted at 3:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 5, 2015 at Immaculate Conception Church with the Reverends Don Antweiler, Gregory L. Meystrik and I. C. Medina concelebrating. Entombment will be held in the Mausoleum of Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Immaculate Conception Church or St. Stanislaus School. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.
