Treasure Lake was known as a potential producer of record breaking bass in the 1950s. But it is in Cuba, about 104 miles southeast of Havana and just l short distance from the Bay of Pigs. In March 1977 President Carter lifted the travel ban to Cuba. Mexi-Can Tours obtained exclusive rights to package ours to Treasure Lake.
The first six-day trip was held in October 1977. Roland was on it. As quoted in the December 16, 1977 Globe-Democrat, Roland said, "I wanted to be irst for the pure adventure of it. And I wanted to see what it looked like down there politically. I wouldn't want to live there. But the Cubans were very lice. They gave us the red-carpet treatment. We could take our cameras and do what we wanted to do. There were no restrictions. I didn't see a rifle mywhere." Roland logged 82 bass ranging from about 14 incles to five pounds, in about 24 hours of fishing time.
