Winfield Scott George, son of Isaac George and Arminta Susan Davis, was born on July 9, 1854.1,2
From a journal writted by his brother, William Buckley George: "When he was in his 14th year he had the misfortune to have a horse run off with him. He had been sent with a bucket of dinner to some men working in the woods on our upper farm. After the men had eaten their dinner, the boy started to home some two miles from where the men were at work in the woods. To the road or highway was bout 1/4 of a mile. When he got to the road he was compelled to get off the horse to open and get through and shut a large farm gate, so he set the bucket on the fence, go off, got through the gate and onto the horse again. Then he rode up to the fence to get the bucket, when a loose saucer in the bucket rattled when he lifted the bucket form the fence. The horse being a very strong well fed spirited young horse, before the boy could gather his reigns, keep on and take off the bucket, the hose was on his best licks running. From this time on the boy had all he could do to stay on the horse. About one hundred yards down the road was a stock bridge, to allow stock to go under the bridge from the pasture fields on the west of the road to the east side of the road for water. The road went on to the bridge in a west of south direction, made a turn on the bridge to east of south. The horse in his running instead of making the turns of the bridge kept on in the same direction he was going, went off the bridge fell about ten feet and landed on his back. Father the week before refused one hundred and fifty dollars for the horse.. Ever after that his value was nothing. In the fall of horse and boy, after making an examination we came to the conclusion that the boy fell over twenty feet and landed on his head on a large boulder. About one year from this time the boy became afflicted with Eliptic fits and sometimes he would have from two to four in a day. He had suffered in this way some two years. We had done one of our annual hog-butcherings for the meat of the family the coming year. I was rubbing salt into the joints of the meat in a barrel of salt and father was packing and salting the meat away in a large meat barrel. The boy was standing between us. He made a peculiar whine an invariable sign that he would fall. Instantly and without thought to keep him from a hard fall I grabbed one of his hands, father doing the same thing with the other hands. When to our glad surprise, the spasm or fit receded, leaving the boy standing and laughing at us."3
Winfield died on June 7, 1870 at age 15.2,1 His cause of death was fell off a horse and died.2 He was buried in 1870 in George Family Cemetery in Darbyville, Pickaway County, Ohio.2,1
